Lake Como Wedding Guide 2026
Lake Como, Italy
Hi, my name is Julia Löffler and I am a destination wedding photographer specialising in weddings in Europe. I have photographed several weddings at Lake Como in Italy and fell in love with this beautiful place. The wedding venues at Lake Como are stunning and unique. Let me show you what it’s like to get married at Lake Como from my point of view.
Why Lake Como is One of the Most Magical Wedding Destinations in the World?
There’s something almost cinematic about Lake Como – the soft shimmer of the water, the pastel-colored villages tucked into green hills, and the echo of church bells drifting through mountain air. For centuries, aristocrats and artists have been drawn to this northern Italian paradise, and now couples from around the world are too.
I’ve photographed many stunning weddings here, and each time I return, I’m in awe of how the light dances differently depending on the season or even the hour. Whether you’re dreaming of an opulent celebration at a historic villa or a laid-back elopement with your feet in the lake, Lake Como has a timeless magic that turns wedding days into stories worth retelling.

The Most Exclusive Lake Como Wedding Venues With Costs!
VILLA BALBIANO – THE PINNACLE OF LAKE COMO LUXURY
As a photographer who has had the privilege of capturing beautiful moments at Lake Como, I want to offer you an insider’s perspective on what it truly takes to host your wedding at the magnificent Villa Balbiano.
For couples with a refined taste and a vision for an utterly breathtaking wedding, this 17th-century palazzo is more than a venue – it’s the setting for a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Italian splendor. If you’re considering this iconic location, it’s essential to understand that a wedding at Villa Balbiano is an investment in unparalleled luxury, with starting budgets for a sophisticated 2025 wedding for 150 guests landing around the €637,000.
The quintessential Villa Balbiano experience is a multi-day celebration. For 2025, you can anticipate that a three-day, two-night rental, which includes exclusive use of the estate and accommodation for 12 guests in the main palazzo’s lavish suites, is approximately €250,000. It’s important to remember this is the starting point for creating your dream wedding. The villa can host up to 30 guests overnight by utilizing the additional wing and a charming „villino.“
The impeccably landscaped gardens are perfect for a ceremony and reception of up to 200 guests, with some areas able to accommodate a seated event for as many as 500. For a more intimate affair, the villa’s historic dining room offers a stunning backdrop for up to 50-60 guests.
The venue rental is just the first step in a beautifully complex production. A wedding of this scale necessitates the expertise of a top-tier wedding planner, a service you should budget around €80,000 for.
This is a vital investment to ensure every detail of your destination wedding is flawlessly executed. You should also be prepared for additional venue-related fees for services like security, electricity, and even the ceremonial opening of the historic gate, which can total about €15,000.
Creating the perfect atmosphere is where your vision truly comes to life. Expect high-end catering to start at approximately €500 per person, bringing the total to €75,000 for a 150-guest wedding. To customize the stunning grounds, a starting budget for florals is around €50,000, with an additional €30,000 for rentals and production design to elevate the villa’s inherent beauty.
Preserving these memories is, of course, where I come in. The investment for photography and videography to capture a celebration of this magnitude typically ranges from €5,000 to €15,000. I encourage you to reach out to me directly for a detailed guide on my photography packages and how we can best tell the story of your day
The entertainment for your guests is a key part of the experience. A comprehensive package featuring string musicians, a jazz band, and a reception band, along with the necessary lighting and AV, will be in the neighborhood of €40,000. To set a sophisticated tone from the very beginning, a bespoke stationery suite, including everything from save-the-dates to exquisite day-of signage, is estimated at €12,000.
Finally, ensuring your guests have an unforgettable experience is a hallmark of a luxury wedding. Arranging for their arrival by boat on the shimmering waters of Lake Como is a spectacular touch, costing around €10,000.
For a truly grand finale, a fireworks display at Lake Como over the lake can be arranged for about €12,000. And to ensure the bridal party is picture-perfect, professional hair and makeup for five people will be approximately €5,000.
While these figures offer a solid foundation for planning, it’s worth noting that many of the lavish weddings you see on social media from Villa Balbiano often exceed the million-euro mark. The budget outlined here is for a high-end, yet not extravagant, celebration. The most direct way to influence the budget is by adjusting your guest list, but it is essential to remember that Villa Balbiano is, at its heart, a venue that promises and delivers an experience of ultimate luxury.
VILLA DEL BALBIANELLO
Of all the breathtaking venues that grace the shores of Lake Como, Villa del Balbianello holds a special, almost magical, allure. As a photographer, I can tell you that its terraced gardens and iconic arched loggia, famously featured in films like Casino Royale, offer a cinematic backdrop unlike any other. If you’re dreaming of an intimate and impossibly romantic wedding, here is an exclusive look at what it takes to bring a 50-guest celebration to life at this historic gem.
For a 50-guest wedding at Villa del Balbianello, you can anticipate a starting investment of around €118,500. It’s important to understand that this is a smaller, more intimate venue. For exclusive use of the property for your wedding day, the venue rental fee is €16,000. I highly recommend this option, as the villa is otherwise open to the public during the day, and securing the entire estate ensures the privacy and intimacy your celebration deserves.
For elopements without full rental, be aware that you will be sharing the space with visiting tourists.
Due to its unique, secluded location on a peninsula, the logistics of a Villa del Balbianello wedding require meticulous planning. A seasoned wedding planner is not just recommended, but essential. You should budget around €20,000 for this service to manage the complexities, especially the logistics of vendor load-in which must be done by boat. The venue has a required list of vendors, including their exclusive caterer. A comprehensive catering and alcohol package will be approximately €20,000, which breaks down to about €400 per person and includes food, beverages, staffing, and standard rentals. Any upgrades to rentals would be an additional cost of around €2,500.
To enhance the natural beauty of the setting, a budget of €12,000 will cover your essential floral needs, including ceremony arrangements, personal flowers, and tablescapes. A semi-custom stationery suite to set the tone for your event will be around €5,000. For the all-important task of capturing your day, you can expect to invest around €6,000 each for photography and videography. Please feel free to reach out to me directly for a personalized quote and to discuss my photography collections in more detail.
Creating an unforgettable guest experience is paramount. A classic Riva boat arrival is a quintessential Lake Como experience and will cost about €2,500. For return transportation at the end of the evening, shuttles are a practical option at around €2,500. Hair and makeup services for five people can be budgeted at €4,000. Music for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception, including lighting and AV, will be approximately €10,000. While the villa’s indoor and outdoor spaces can accommodate your 50 guests for the reception, the venue does recommend considering a marquee or tent, which would be an additional €12,000.
It is important to note that Villa del Balbianello does not offer on-site accommodations. Your guests will need to stay off-site, and a wonderful nearby option is the luxurious Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio. This also presents a fantastic alternative for a larger reception if you choose to have just your intimate ceremony at Villa del Balbianello.
VILLA SOLA CABIATI
For couples who dream of stepping directly into a world of aristocratic splendor and historical romance, there is no venue more captivating than Villa Sola Cabiati. As a photographer, I can attest that this 18th-century masterpiece, often called „La Perla,“ offers a truly transportive experience. It is a place where every corner, from the fresco-adorned halls to the perfectly manicured Italian gardens reaching the lake’s edge, exudes an air of timeless elegance and exclusivity.
Once the summer residence of Duke Gabrio Serbelloni, the villa is a living museum, housing priceless artifacts, including a bed that belonged to Napoleon and Josephine. Hosting your wedding here means offering your guests an unparalleled journey into the heart of Italian nobility. Villa Sola Cabiati is available for exclusive rental, ensuring absolute privacy for you and your guests. The six-suite villa, accommodating up to 12 people, must be booked for a minimum number of nights, which varies by season.
For instance, in the low season (early spring and late autumn), the rate is approximately €10,000 per night for a minimum of three nights. During the high season, which covers most of spring and autumn, this increases to €15,000 per night, with minimum stays of three to four nights. It is crucial to note that events are generally not permitted during the peak summer months (late May to late September), a period reserved for exclusive residential stays.
For a wedding celebration of 50 guests, you should anticipate a total investment in the range of €115,000 to €145,000. This encompasses the villa’s privatization, granting you and your guests access to its historic salons, magnificent gardens, and the dedicated, world-class service staff managed by the neighboring Grand Hotel Tremezzo. The logistical and creative execution of a wedding at such a prestigious and historically significant venue demands the highest level of professional expertise. Comprehensive wedding planning services, including full-scale event management and vendor coordination, start at approximately €17,800.
Capturing the story of your day in such a magnificent setting requires a photographer who understands its unique light and grandeur. The investment for my photography collections reflects the bespoke, full-service experience I provide. I invite you to contact me directly to receive my detailed pricing guide and to discuss how we can beautifully preserve the memories of your celebration at this remarkable property.
VILLA REGINA TEODOLINDA
In my work as a Lake Como wedding photographer, I often find that the most enchanting venues are the ones that feel less like a venue and more like your own private, luxurious home for the weekend. Villa Regina Teodolinda, nestled in the heart of the charming village of Laglio, embodies this spirit perfectly. It’s a venue with a romantic soul, offering an intimate embrace rather than overwhelming grandeur, making it one of my favorite locations for couples who desire authentic, relaxed luxury.
What truly sets this historic villa apart is the feeling of having your feet practically in the water. Its direct lake access and private dock create a seamless connection to the beauty of Como, offering a backdrop that is both breathtaking and deeply personal. It’s the ideal setting for creating an unforgettable house-party atmosphere, where your celebration can extend over an entire weekend.
For an exclusive Saturday celebration, the investment is €10,000, which includes a one-night stay and accommodation for 12 of your closest guests across six beautiful suites. For couples with the flexibility of a weekday or Sunday wedding, the rate is a more accessible €8,000 for the same exclusive use and accommodations. The starting investment for catering for your 12 resident guests is €6,600 (plus 10% VAT), ensuring a world-class culinary experience to match the stunning surroundings.
Capturing the heartfelt, candid moments of a celebration at a place as intimate as this is a true joy. The play of light on the water and the genuine laughter shared in its private courtyards create memories that last a lifetime. I invite you to connect with me to see my detailed photography collections and to discuss how we can tell the beautiful story of your wedding day at this enchanting lakeside jewel.
VILLA PIZZO
I’ve had the honor of capturing celebrations at many of the lake’s most iconic properties, but few can rival the sheer romance and historical gravitas of Villa Pizzo. With one of the longest lakefronts in the area, this venue offers an incredible sense of arrival and a stunningly diverse canvas for your wedding day. Its sprawling, centuries-old gardens and the famous Darsena, the ancient stone boathouse, provide a series of breathtaking backdrops that are simply unparalleled.
For couples considering this historic gem, it’s important to understand the structure of their offering. Villa Pizzo provides exclusive use of the entire property for a 24-hour period, with a venue rental fee of €30,000. This ensures complete privacy for you and your guests to immerse yourselves in the magic of the estate. The villa has a partnership with a required catering vendor and stipulates a minimum guest count of 100 for catering services. This makes it an ideal choice for larger, more lavish celebrations where you want to ensure a seamless, high-quality culinary experience.
One of the exciting developments at the venue is the addition of a permanent glass marquee. This elegant structure provides a weather-proof solution for your reception without sacrificing the magnificent lake views, blending modern convenience with the villa’s timeless charm. From a photographer’s perspective, the variety is extraordinary, from the sun-dappled paths of the Italian gardens to the dramatic, sweeping terrace by the water, every moment presents a new opportunity for an unforgettable photograph.
The investment to create your story here is significant, and so is the importance of preserving it beautifully. If you are envisioning a grand, romantic affair set against one of Lake Como’s most historic landscapes, I would be delighted to share my photography collections with you. Please reach out to discuss how we can capture the timeless elegance of your wedding day at Villa Pizzo.
LAKE COMO HIDDEN GEM WEDDING VENUES
Discovering venues that aren’t on every wedding blog is part of the magic. For couples who value a sense of discovery and a more unique story, Lake Como has incredible gems that offer all the luxury of the grand dames but with a different, more intimate soul.
Here are three of my favorite „hidden gem“ venues for an unforgettable Lake Como wedding:
1. Villa Monastero Pax, Lenno
The Vibe: Sacred tranquility and understated historical grace. Nestled right next to the peninsula of Villa del Balbianello, this former monastery is often overlooked but is, in my opinion, one of the most soulful venues on the entire lake. It doesn’t shout; it whispers. The sense of peace here is palpable, from its beautiful colonnaded loggia to the ancient cypress trees dotting the serene gardens.
For the Couple Who: Is deeply romantic and values history and a sense of calm. They are drawn to timeless elegance over trendy extravagance and want a venue that feels like a private sanctuary for their guests.
Photographer’s Dream: The light under the arched stone loggia is absolutely sublime for portraits, creating a beautiful, soft-focus effect. The flat, manicured lawn directly on the water is perfect for a breathtaking ceremony or an elegant dinner, offering unobstructed views of the lake and mountains without the crowds of its famous neighbor.
Practical Considerations: The villa offers exclusive use, ensuring complete privacy. It’s ideal for medium-sized weddings and provides a stunning canvas that can be styled to feel classically Italian or elegantly minimalist.
2. Villa Lario, Pognana Lario
The Vibe: Contemporary elegance and modern architectural luxury. Located on the lesser-traveled eastern shore, Villa Lario is a departure from the traditional neoclassical palazzos. It’s a collection of sleek, modern suites and private villas built into the cliffside, offering incredible privacy and a fresh, sophisticated aesthetic.
For the Couple Who: Appreciates modern design, clean lines, and five-star amenities. They want the beauty of Lake Como paired with effortless, contemporary sophistication. This is the choice for the design-forward couple who might be more at home in a chic boutique hotel than a historic museum.
Photographer’s Dream: The infinity pool that seems to melt into the lake is an iconic shot waiting to happen. The property’s verticality, with its terraced gardens and cliffside suites, allows for dramatic, multi-layered compositions that are impossible to get elsewhere. The minimalist interiors are flooded with natural light, perfect for bright, airy getting-ready photos.
Practical Considerations: Villa Lario is designed for exclusive buyouts, making it perfect for an immersive, multi-day wedding weekend. It includes two large private villas and several suites, with a total capacity to sleep over 30 guests. This is the ultimate modern house-party venue.
3. Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como, Blevio
The Vibe: The pinnacle of five-star service meets botanical splendor. While a hotel might not seem „off-the-beaten-path,“ the Mandarin Oriental is a world unto itself. Housed in the historic Villa Roccabruna on the quiet Blevio shoreline, it offers a level of service and a seamless guest experience that is simply unmatched. It’s surrounded by a lush, sprawling botanical park, giving it a sense of seclusion and natural grandeur.
For the Couple Who: Prioritizes an impeccable guest experience above all else. They want the confidence and ease that comes with a world-class hotel brand, from the spa services to the Michelin-guide-mentioned dining, all while being immersed in the beauty of a historic villa.
Photographer’s Dream: The iconic floating pool on the lake is a showstopper for welcome party photos or a dramatic couple’s session. The vast botanical gardens are a private paradise, offering endless variety, from hidden pathways to exotic plants and romantic greenhouses. The blend of historic architecture with the hotel’s modern, elegant styling provides a rich and diverse photographic playground.
Practical Considerations: The hotel is adept at hosting everything from intimate elopements to grand celebrations. Its variety of event spaces, both indoors and out, provides flexibility and a built-in rain plan without compromising on style. It’s a fantastic option for couples who have many guests traveling internationally and want to ensure their comfort and entertainment are flawlessly managed.
Legal vs. Symbolic Weddings in Italy: What You Should Know
Planning a wedding in Italy, particularly in the breathtaking setting of Lake Como, often brings up a crucial decision for international couples: do we have a legally binding ceremony in Italy, or opt for a symbolic one? Each approach offers distinct advantages and considerations, and understanding the differences is key to planning your perfect day for 2026.
Can Foreigners Legally Marry in Italy?
Yes, absolutely! Foreign nationals can legally marry in Italy. The country recognizes civil, Catholic, and certain non-Catholic religious ceremonies as legally binding. Civil ceremonies are conducted by a civil officer (typically the Mayor or a local registrar) in designated venues like town halls or other government-approved locations. For a Catholic wedding to be legally recognized, it must incorporate a civil element. Other religious ceremonies can be legally binding if a prior civil ceremony is completed or incorporated into the religious service. While it’s certainly doable, the process involves a specific set of documentation and adherence to Italian legal procedures.
What Documents Do We Need for a Legal Wedding at Lake Como?
The documentation required for a legal civil marriage in Italy for foreigners varies slightly depending on your nationality, but generally includes:
Valid Passports: Essential for both partners.
Birth Certificates: Original full-length birth certificates are typically required.
Nulla Osta (Certificate of No Impediment) or Affidavit: This is a crucial document issued by your home country’s consulate or embassy in Italy (or an equivalent authority) stating that there are no legal impediments to your marriage under your home country’s laws. This document often needs to be legalized (e.g., with an Apostille if your country is part of the Hague Convention) and translated into Italian.
For US Citizens: You’ll typically swear an affidavit before the U.S. Consul in Italy, which then needs to be legalized at the Prefettura.
For UK Citizens: You’ll generally obtain a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) from your local registry and complete a bilingual statutory declaration. Both documents need to be legalized with an Apostille via the FCDO.
For Canadian Citizens: You’ll obtain a Nulla Osta from the Canadian Consulate in Rome, then have it legalized at the Prefettura.
For EU Citizens (especially from Munich Convention countries like Germany, Austria, Luxembourg):A multilingual Certificate of Marriage Capacity may suffice, simplifying the process without requiring translation or legalization.
Divorce Decrees or Death Certificates (if applicable): If either partner has been previously married, official documentation proving the termination of that marriage (final divorce decree or death certificate of the previous spouse) will be necessary. If a woman divorced less than 300 days before the new wedding, she might need a non-pregnancy certificate.
Atto Notorio (for some nationalities): This is an affidavit sworn before an Italian Consul outside of Italy or a court official within Italy, stating no impediments to the marriage. This may be required in addition to or as an alternative to the Nulla Osta, depending on your nationality.
Witnesses: You will need two adult witnesses (who are not the interpreters) for the ceremony.
Interpreter: If neither of you speaks Italian, an official interpreter is required for the civil ceremony.
All foreign documents usually need to be translated into Italian by a certified translator and often legalized (e.g., with an Apostille) by the relevant authority in your home country before being submitted to the Italian authorities. It is highly advisable to start gathering these documents well in advance, ideally 3-6 months before your intended wedding date, as the process can be lengthy.
Should We Do the Legal Part at Home and Symbolic in Como?
This is a very popular option for many couples planning destination weddings in Italy, especially in a picturesque location like Lake Como. There are compelling reasons why many choose a „legal at home, symbolic in Italy“ approach:
Benefits of a Symbolic Wedding in Lake Como (with legal marriage at home):
Ultimate Flexibility and Personalization: A symbolic ceremony offers unparalleled freedom. You can exchange vows anywhere you desire – a lakeside garden, a villa rooftop, a private boat – without being restricted by legal venue requirements. You can customize every aspect, from your vows and readings to music and rituals, truly reflecting your love story.
Reduced Bureaucracy and Stress: Bypassing the Italian legal marriage process significantly reduces the amount of paperwork, translations, and consulate visits required. This alleviates a considerable amount of pre-wedding stress, allowing you to focus on the celebratory aspects of your trip.
Choose Your Own Officiant: For a symbolic ceremony, you can have a professional celebrant, a close friend, or even a family member officiate, adding an incredibly personal touch to your day. I recommend The Italian Wedding Celebrants.
Focus on the Experience: With the legalities handled in your home country, you can arrive in Lake Como and immediately immerse yourselves in the romance and joy of your wedding celebration, rather than navigating administrative tasks.
Language Comfort: The symbolic ceremony can be conducted entirely in your native language, making it more personal and inclusive for you and your guests.
Cost-Effectiveness (Potentially): While there are still costs associated with a symbolic celebrant and potentially venue fees, avoiding the legal processing fees in Italy and the time spent on bureaucracy can sometimes make this a more efficient choice for your budget.
Considerations for a Legal Wedding in Italy:
Authenticity of Location: For some, the idea of legally marrying in Italy, specifically in a beautiful Italian town hall, adds an authentic layer to their destination wedding experience.
Streamlined Process (if handled by a planner): While complex, an experienced local wedding planner can expertly guide you through all the legal steps, making the process much smoother than attempting it yourself.
One and Done: You avoid having two separate wedding dates and can celebrate your legally binding union directly in your dream destination.
Ultimately, the decision between a legal and symbolic wedding in Lake Como comes down to your priorities. If ease, personalization, and a focus purely on the celebration are paramount, a symbolic ceremony after handling the legalities at home is often the preferred choice. However, if the idea of a fully legally binding Italian wedding appeals to your romantic vision, it is certainly achievable with careful planning and professional assistance.
When Is the Best Time of Year to Get Married at Lake Como?
Choosing the ideal time of year for your Lake Como wedding in 2026 is crucial, as each season offers a distinct ambiance, affects lighting for photography, influences crowd levels, and impacts pricing. While Lake Como is undeniably beautiful year-round, understanding the seasonal nuances will help you select the perfect backdrop for your special day.
Seasonal Pros and Cons (Lighting, Crowds, Pricing)
Spring (April – June): The Sweet Spot
Pros: This is often considered the most ideal time. The weather is generally pleasant and mild, ranging from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F), making it perfect for outdoor ceremonies and receptions. The gardens and villas burst into vibrant bloom, offering stunning natural decor. Crowds are fewer than in peak summer, especially in April and early May, allowing for a more intimate atmosphere. Days are long, providing ample daylight.
Cons: Early spring (April) can still have some unpredictable rain, so a backup plan for indoor spaces is wise. As June approaches, prices begin to climb, and tourist numbers increase.
Pricing: Mid-range to high, with increasing costs as you move closer to June. Off-season pricing might apply in early April.
Summer (July – August): Peak Season Radiance
Pros: Expect warm, sunny weather, with average temperatures around 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), reaching highs up to 33°C (86°F). The lake is bustling with activity, and the long, balmy evenings are perfect for al-fresco dining and dancing under the stars. The water sparkles, and the landscapes are lush and vibrant.
Cons: This is the busiest and most expensive time. Lake Como experiences significant crowds, which can impact privacy and lead to higher competition for venues, accommodations, and vendors. The heat can be intense, especially in August, potentially making daytime outdoor events less comfortable. Some Italian couples avoid August due to heat and crowds.
Pricing: Highest pricing for venues and vendors due to peak demand. Expect surge pricing and limited availability.
Fall (September – October): The Golden Charm
Pros: Early to mid-September is another prime choice. Temperatures remain pleasant, averaging 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), but without the intense summer heat. Crowds begin to thin out significantly after August, offering a more tranquil experience. The stunning autumn foliage transforms the hillsides into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and yellows, providing a warm, romantic backdrop for photos.
Cons: As October progresses, the weather becomes cooler and more unpredictable, with increased chances of rain. Days are shorter, and some tourist services and smaller venues may begin to close for the winter season.
Pricing: Prices generally decrease from peak summer, offering better value while still enjoying beautiful weather and scenery.
Winter (November – March): Intimate and Cozy
Pros: Lake Como transforms into a peaceful, quiet wonderland. There are very few tourists, creating an incredibly intimate and serene atmosphere. Snow-capped mountains can offer a unique and magical backdrop. Ideal for cozy indoor weddings in historic villas or charming hotels with fireplaces. Off-season pricing offers the best value for venues and vendors.
Cons: Temperatures are cold, averaging 4°C to 8°C (39°F to 46°F), with occasional frost and fog. Many lakeside towns become very quiet, and some venues, restaurants, and ferry services may be closed or have limited hours. Daylight hours are significantly shorter. Outdoor options are extremely limited.
Pricing: Lowest pricing of the year, making it the most budget-friendly option for a Lake Como wedding.
Golden Hour Photography Tips for Each Season
„Golden hour,“ the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset, provides soft, warm, and flattering light that is ideal for wedding photography. Timing your couple’s portraits and key moments around this window will yield truly magical results.
Spring (April – June):
Golden Hour: Tends to be later in the evening as days lengthen. In April, sunset might be around 7:30 PM, extending to 9 PM by late June.
Tips: The light is generally clearer and softer, perfect for capturing the fresh blooms and vibrant greens of the season. Aim for photos as the sun dips behind the mountains for dramatic silhouettes and a gentle glow on the lake. The long evenings allow for extended portrait sessions.
Summer (July – August):
Golden Hour: Very late in the evening, sometimes as late as 9:30 PM in July.
Tips: The summer sun can be harsh mid-day. Prioritize golden hour for your couple’s portraits. The light is incredibly intense and warm, creating a truly cinematic feel. Consider boat rides during golden hour for iconic Lake Como shots. Be mindful of humidity, which can sometimes create haziness, but also beautiful diffused light.
Fall (September – October):
Golden Hour: Gradually gets earlier as the season progresses. In early September, it might be around 7:30 PM, shifting to 6 PM or earlier by late October.
Tips: This season offers some of the most beautiful and rich golden hour light, complementing the vibrant autumn foliage. The slightly cooler temperatures make it more comfortable for extended photo sessions. Look for opportunities to capture the warm hues of the trees against the deep blue of the lake.
Winter (November – March):
Golden Hour: Much earlier in the afternoon, potentially as early as 4:30 PM in December/January.
Tips: Winter golden hour is brief but can be incredibly atmospheric. The light is very low and soft, creating a cool, ethereal quality, especially with potential snow on the mountains. Utilize indoor spaces with large windows that capture this low, beautiful light. The starkness of the winter landscape can also offer a unique, minimalist backdrop.
Regardless of the season you choose, always coordinate closely with your photographer to plan your wedding day timeline around the golden hour for those breathtaking, signature Lake Como images.
Where to Stay in Lake Como? The Best Places For You!
As a photographer who has had the privilege of capturing so many beautiful moments around Lake Como, I’m often asked by couples where their guests should stay. The beauty of this region is that it offers something for every taste and budget, from the grandest of hotels to the most charming and intimate of hideaways. Here are a few of my personal recommendations to help your guests find the perfect place to rest their heads.
Luxury Hotels & Retreats
For those of your guests who wish to experience the same level of opulence and grandeur as your wedding day, Lake Como offers some of the most breathtaking hotels in the world. These are more than just places to stay; they are destinations in themselves, offering impeccable service and unforgettable experiences.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo stands as a true icon of the lake, and I can tell you from personal experience that it’s a feast for the senses. With its Art Nouveau elegance, floating pool on the lake, and stunning views of Bellagio, it’s a place where your guests can truly immerse themselves in the glamour of Lake Como. I’ve always found the light here to be particularly magical, especially in the early morning when the mist rises from the water.
For a more intimate, yet equally luxurious experience, Passalacqua is nothing short of a dream. This 18th-century villa, lovingly restored by the De Santis family, feels like a private home, with its fragrant gardens of roses, mimosa, and magnolia descending to the water’s edge. The 24 suites are adorned with original frescoes and Como silks, creating an atmosphere of refined elegance. It’s a place for quiet moments and deep relaxation, perfect for guests who appreciate the finer things in life.
Mandarin Oriental, Lake Como represents the perfect marriage of contemporary design and natural beauty. This hotel is a modern masterpiece, with its world-class spa and serene atmosphere creating a haven of tranquility. I’ve always been struck by the sense of peace that pervades this beautiful property, making it ideal for guests who want to unwind in sophisticated surroundings.
For Charming and Comfortable Stays
Not everyone needs five-star luxury to enjoy the beauty of Lake Como. There are many wonderful mid-range options that offer comfort, character, and warm Italian hospitality. These are the places I often recommend to guests who want a more authentic and down-to-earth experience.
Hotel Olivedo in Varenna holds a special place in my heart. I have a soft spot for Varenna, and this hotel is one of its true gems. Located right by the ferry at Piazza Martiri della Libertà 14, it’s the perfect base for exploring the lake, with easy access to both transportation and the charming village streets. The rooms are spacious, the staff are incredibly welcoming, and it has a lovely, old-world charm that I find so captivating. For families, they offer suites with private terraces that provide intimate spaces to enjoy the lake views.
Hotel Belvedere in Bellagio is another favorite of mine. Perched on a hill at Via Valassina 31, it offers some of the most stunning views in this already spectacular village. It’s a family-run hotel with a beautiful garden and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere that makes guests feel immediately at home. The combination of comfort, location, and genuine hospitality makes it a wonderful place to unwind and soak in the beauty of the lake.
For the Budget-Conscious Traveler: Airbnb and Charming B&Bs
For guests who are looking for more affordable options, or who simply prefer a more local experience, there are many wonderful Airbnbs and Bed & Breakfasts dotted around the lake. These can be a great way to experience the authentic charm of Italian life while staying within a reasonable budget.
Villa del Cigno in Lecco is a charming B&B that I consider a bit of a hidden gem. Located at Via Caldone 3, this beautiful, authentic villa sits peacefully just 800 meters from the main square, surrounded by a lovely garden with a children’s playground. The hosts are incredibly warm and welcoming, and the property offers free parking and WiFi – practical touches that make a real difference for traveling guests.
Casa vacanza Natasha in Como provides comfortable accommodation at Via Canturina 206, about 4km from the city center. This recently renovated guest house offers modern amenities including air conditioning, flat-screen TV, and private bathrooms, making it an excellent value option for budget-conscious travelers.
Don’t overlook the many wonderful Airbnb options scattered around the lake. From modern apartments in Como town to charming cottages nestled in the hills, there’s something for every budget and style. I’ve seen so many happy guests find their perfect home-away-from-home through Airbnb, often in locations that offer a more intimate and personal connection to the local community.

For me, there is nothing more beautiful than capturing what happens in love from the bottom of my heart. With my pictures, I want to show you how wonderful it is to love, how precious life is and how especially beautiful the little things can be. Photography is an integral part of my life and not a day goes by without me working on my heart business.
I can’t wait to get to know you.
